Corn ethanol: Understand how the expansion of biorefineries and the increased supply of DDG and DDGS are putting pressure on soybean meal margins.
The rapid expansion of the biofuel industry in Brazil is profoundly reshaping the economic flows of agribusiness. With nearly 30 biorefineries in operation and the strategic support of the E30 and E32 blending mandates, domestic grain processing is on track to reach record levels of domestic consumption.
However, the major driver of the current transformation goes beyond fuel production: the growth of corn-based ethanol is resulting in a massive incremental supply of high-protein co-products, such as DDG (Dried Distillers Grains ) and DDGS (Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles ).
The sale of these volumes in the domestic market now competes directly with soybean meal in the animal nutrition segment, altering price dynamics in the main producing regions and requiring feed mills, feedlots, and oilseed processing plants to reassess their competitive positioning.
Explore these topics in greater depth in this article:
The structural growth of corn-based ethanol plants ensures an increasingly robust and predictable supply of high-quality byproducts. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, domestic biofuel production is expected to approach the 10 billion-liter mark in the 2025/26 harvest.
This industrial advancement consolidates a steady and consistent supply of byproducts for the animal nutrition sector. What was once viewed merely as a byproduct of the distillation process has become a strategic source of revenue for the plants and a well-established alternative supply source for the animal feed market, reducing the historical reliance on a single protein source.
The massive influx of this volume of distillers’ grains alters the ingredient substitution ratio in feed formulations, directly impacting traditional players in the crushing industry.
In regions near major corn-based ethanol production hubs—particularly in Brazil’s Midwest—the arrival of DDGS has aggressively intensified competition with traditional protein sources. By entering directly into the nutritional formulations used by feed mills and feedlots, this byproduct is putting pressure on local soybean meal prices. This trend reduces regional premiums for soybean meal and squeezes profit margins in the soybean crushing industry in these specific markets, forcing the sector to recalculate its marketing strategies.
The levels of soybean meal replacement with DDG and DDGS vary depending on the animal species and the local production system. The most intensive use and greatest potential for substitution occurs in beef and dairy cattle production, where the animals’ rumen highly efficiently utilizes the protein and energy profile of distillers’ grains.
In the poultry and swine sectors, however, substitution occurs only partially and in a controlled manner, being strictly limited by the specific nutritional requirements of each stage of the animals’ development, which preserves exclusive market niches for soybean meal.
In addition to domestic consumption, the financial sustainability of the corn ethanol supply chain depends on diversifying sales channels through exports. The recent opening of the Chinese market represented a historic milestone for the sector, requiring complex negotiations involving the signing of strict sanitary protocols, detailed industrial plant certification processes, proof of full traceability, and rigorous quality controls.
Currently, 13 Brazilian industrial facilities are authorized to ship the product to China. The importance and viability of this route were solidified by a pioneering transaction advised by Hedgepoint, in which the first shipment to the Chinese market totaled approximately 62,000 metric tons. This large-scale operation paved the way for a significant expansion of exports in the coming years, connecting Brazil’s Midwest directly to global demand for protein.
Managing performance in the co-product market requires an integrated approach, since the prices of DDGS, corn, and soybean meal, as well as exchange rates, are interrelated. As industrial supply grows and new export routes open up, profit margins fluctuate rapidly, making cross-hedgestrategies the best option for ensuring cost predictability for both buyers and producers.
